  • 11-2-05  Make sure you visit the Guild Wars game pages, as there are nice additions being added.
  • 10-27-05  Well that didn't take long... I just beat Quake 4.  I was rather pleased about the way they put the game together.  For those reviewers or websites that say "It so 2001", what did they expect it's based on a game that has roots back to 1996 or farther.  If you like the Quake series then it is great.  If you didn't like the series, this one is good but it may not change your mind of the series.  If your expecting a different gameplay then Quake, your going to be disappointed.
  • 10-27-05  New Nvidia Nforce4 Drivers have been released visit www.nvidia.com to get them.
  • 10-27-05  New Nvidia Forceware Beta 81.87 have also been released, go here to get them.
  • 10-25-05  After further review... Quake 4 is not like Doom3.  The engine is the same and some of the textures are similar to Doom3, but there is actually a storyline here.  Once you get to the plot twist, things get really good.  I also would not recommend letting any kids plays this, or even watch it for that matter as it is a little gruesome (wait until you see your first human battery, yuck).
  • 10-25-05  The beta ATI Catalyst drivers I mentioned a couple of days ago are working really well with Quake 4.  I saw a massive improvement in framerate once I installed these.
  • 10-25-05  It looks like ATI has also added more Mobility cards to their driver set.  Go to the driver page from the main site www.ati.com, but when it asks you for your card choose the mobile card and not the Radeons as you normally would for your desktop system.  If all else fails, it is possible to mod the desktop drivers to work with your ATI Mobile video card.  The the mod tool at http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/ .  I have been using this mod tool for the past several years with good results, but actual mileage may vary.
  • 10-22-05  Creative Audigy 2 & 4 owners with Quake 4.  Make sure you grab the latest beta drivers on creative's site to get the OpenAL audio fix.  It sounds nicer, has better performance, and won't dump you to the desktop if you enable OpenAL in the game.  Go to www.soundblaster.com to get it.
  • 10-22-05  I almost forgot to mention about Nvidia's new drivers.  The 81.85 Forcewares are out.  Go to www.nvidia.com to grab them.
  • 10-20-05  Fear is out in stores now...I would have picked it up if it wasn't for....
  • 10-20-05  Quake 4 is out in stores too.  This one comes in 2 flavors, standard & the DVD Collectors version.  If you like extra packaging the collectors is not for you.  But, if you like Quake 2 + the expansions and a 'making of' video for $10 more, then this is the version for you.  I'm a huge game fan of the series but my first impressions was "Wow, this game looks exactly like Doom3.  Did I accidentally pick up the Doom expansion?".  But I didn't honestly get through enough of it to make a final decision on it yet.
  • 10-20-05  And ATI card owners are getting a beta driver release today.  This is suppose to fix some "errors" in Q4 & Serious Sam 2.  But what's really cool is what they don't mention on the fix.  These drivers are suppose to give a massive framerate improvement in games that use the Doom3 engine (odd the beta is out on the same day as Q4...lol).  Head over here to get them.  Just remember they are BETA.  If you don't know what that means, please don't download them.
  • 10-20-05  I also spotted Serious Sam 2 in stores today as well.  So if you up for a totally different type of first person shooter, grab this one for $30.
  • 10-20-05  Guild Wars database update:  I have over 200 collector items entered in the database but I'm missing information on a lot of the stats of armor from character classes other than warriors.  I'm still working on this project, but it's taking longer than I had expected.
  • 10-7-05  I just saw Ultimate Spider-Man and Black & White 2 in stores today.  U:S-M looks good, but I'm passing on B&W2.
  • 10-6-05  Wow...talking about luck. I had another hard drive failure just this week.  For those keeping track this is my second failure that I posted about and my third failure on this drive model.  BTW: If you were wondering, all the drives were WD's WD1000BB (retail 100GB drives) and suffered from "clicking", with the last 2 being made in 03Aug2001 in which the serial numbers were within approx 4500.  If anyone else has had this issue with this drive model, drop me an email.
  • 10-6-05  Official information has been hitting the net regarding the release of ATI's new X1xxx Line of cards.  Unfortunately they just seem par with Nvidia's offerings at the same price points.  This is not going to good for ATI as I see them now behind in the race since Nvidia's offering has been widely available for many months.
  • 10-4-05  I'm working on a guide for Guild Wars so the "news" section is going to have to take the back seat for a while.  I'll still try to post the big stuff though.
  • 10-4-05  Quake 4 has now been announced as being in GOLD status.  More hours soon to be gone from my life.
  • 10-4-05  UFO: Aftershock is also scheduled to be released yet this month.  This is a direct sequel to UFO: Aftermath (From the X-Com series).
  • 9-24-05  Been busy lately so there was a lapse since the last update.  I'll try to cover the main points below.
  • The Serious Sam 2 Demo has been released.  Go to your favorite download site to get it.
  • This is a big week in computer games.  Dawn of War: Winter Assault, Neverwinter Nights: Kingmaker, Fable, & DragonShard have all been released.  Dungeon Siege II was released a couple weeks earlier.
  • ATI 5.9 Catalyst drivers are now available, head over to www.ati.com to grab them.
  • You can pre-order Quake 4 from Best Buy right now and get a nice Q4 black t-shirt (it's quite cool looking).
  • Creative Labs launched its new Soundblaster XFi soundcard, If your a gamer this should be on the top of your must buy hardware as it greatly accelerates your 3D audio processing.
  • ArenaNet launched its Guild Wars free expansion which added another area (Did I mention it was FREE!).  Go to http://www.guildwars.com/news/gameupdates.html for more info.
  • 8-18-05  ATI released the 5.8 Catalyst drivers, head over to www.ati.com to grab them.  Thanks VR6.
  • 8-18-05  Hope everyone had fun that attended QuakeCon (you lucky ....)
  • 8-18-05  Just got all my website email addresses installed on the fresh Windows install, so I will now see your emails.
  • 8-12-05  Nvidia has it's 7800GT video card widely available now, and on that note the 77.77 Forceware drivers have been released.  Go to www.nvidia.com for more.
  • 8-12-05  QuakeCon started yesterday, and boy do I envy all of you that are seeing QuakeWars and Quake4 in motion.  If your not there, just google the game name and you can see the 12 pictures everyone has.
  • 8-12-05  Don't forget to head over to Windows update and get the critical patches...please.
  • 8-7-05  Some of you might have been wondering what was up with the lack of updates lately.  Well basically there were 2 things... first there is Guild Wars (Don't play this game if you value your time...nuff said).  Second, having a main system hard drive dying on me (lesson learned, USE a backup plan if running RAID 0).  So anyways here my attempt to cover items that might have been missed in no particular order.
  • ATI's 5.7 Catalyst drivers were released, go to www.ati.com and grab them.
  • The demo for F.E.A.R. has been released, go to you favorite game site for download.
  • The demo for Dungeon Siege 2 has been released, go to you favorite game site for download (Be warned this one is LARGE...over 1 GB).
  • The demo for DragonShard (D&D's new RTS) has been released, go to you favorite game site for download.
  • Updated stats on Guild War items on the GW FAQ page, thanks VR6 for that heads up.  (Classic case of cut & paste strikes again.)
  • Check out Nvidia's specs of the GeForce 7800 if you get a chance as more info is available.  It seems pretty impressive although I am sticking with ATI for a bit yet.  (History... was a 3DFX fan, then Nvidia, now ATi, Next who knows.)
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been pulled from most stores for the now famous "Hot Coffee" mod.  What's really interesting is the lack of info the mass population doesn't seem to grasp.  This was an ESRB "M" rated game, meaning you have to be at least 17 years old to buy it.  The big fuss is to make it an "AO" game meaning you have to be 18 years old to buy it.  This is almost ridiculous as all this fuss was for less than 1 year difference in the person buying it.  Although I do agree the ESRB was in the right for changing this rating on this game (as they define the ratings, and the game does fall into the next rating now).  But, all the parents that complained they bought it for their young kids (under 17) and were "shocked" at the content, seriously need to be sat down and talked to by a professional counselor.  They bought a game named "Grand Theft Auto"!  Come on, did they actually expect anything less from a game with that name?  But oh well, life goes on.  If you want more info on these ratings go to http://www.esrb.org/ .
  • During My Windows XP reinstall, I noticed that Microsoft now REQUIRES to to verify your copy of windows is legit before downloading Window updates.  Looks like the 30 day window to test an install is effectively gone now.  The only other solution is to run unpatched, which really isn't.
  • Speaking of which, more critical Window XP updates were released, go fix it if you haven't already, please!
  • Nvidia Released it's Forceware 77.76 Drivers, head over to www.nvidia.com if that's your flavor of video hardware.
  • A new keyboard is coming out...(I know you must be wondering, what's so special about a keyboard?) ...that has an LCD display on each button.  This will definitely be one of the best video game devices IMHO.  Check it out at http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/ for more info.  Thanks VR6 for pointing this out to me.
  • 6-22-05  Far-cry has now been updated to version 1.32, and more pictures of the upcoming expansion has been released.  Go here for both.
  • 6-22-05  Nvidia's GeForce 7800 GTX has been released and is available.  So if you have wads of cash and Nvidia is your brand of choice then this is your lucky day.
  • 6-11-05  If you haven't already heard, there is some new information from ATI.  They are going to be releasing a dual card format (ATI's answer to Nvidia's SLI) named CrossFire.  This 2nd card should be able to work with the newest PCI Express Radeon cards.  Look for more info on most hardware sites.
  • 6-11-05  Also from ATI, the newest 5.6 Catalyst drivers have been released.  Lots of good press on these drivers.  Go to www.ati.com to download them.
  • 6-11-05  The version of Guild Wars was updated last week.  If you own this game I would highly recommend visiting the game site for what changes have been made, since many new features have been added.  Go to here for more info.

  • 6-2-05  Worked on updating the Guild wars section today, more to come within the week.
  • 5-25-05  Catch-up on game patches today, Doom 3 v1.3 is out as well as Warhammer 40k DOW is up to 1.3 as well (Thanks GeoffVR6 for that one).  Head over to the patches page for more info.
  • 5-25-05  Wow, what a weekend!  A ton of information has been posted on upcoming games.  I don't usually post way in advance but Ageia has received a lot of press at E3. (No surprises there)  Check out all there press releases on their site at http://www.ageia.com/index.html .
  • 5-25-05  Unfortunately, Voodoo Extreme's momentum slowed back to what is was before E3.  Too bad, but on the bright side, their coverage of the E3 games was great.
  • 5-25-05  Make sure to check out the E3 specials on G4 (old TechTV).  Lots of great stuff there, and as a bonus you get to see everything in motion.
  • 5-25-05  Two games have been taking a portion of my free time lately, and because of this I decided to dedicate some detailed files/info for those.  And if your wondering what the two games are, they are Trackmania: Sunrise & Guild Wars.  This means the Mods section will be replaced by a Games section.  In the new Games section the sub-sections will be broken down by the game title.  Keep an eye out for this change, it should occur soon.
  • 5-17-05 News has been slow lately but that's going to change.  The game show E3 is going on right now and by the looks of things, there are a lot of titles of interest.  Stay tuned for more details.
  • 5-17-05 I got off the phone with the local Gamestop today and they told me that they are expecting Trackmania: Sunrise to be arriving Thursday.  I waited until posting this info because the past comments were always "soon".
  • 5-17-05  If you haven't visited www.voodooextreme.com lately, you should check them out.  Although it seem they did a shift again covering more consoles than PC games, they did double the amount of news in one day.
  • 5-11-05 Well I guess the 64bit guys are starting to get some lovin'.  They just released a 64bit patch for FarCry.  Head over to HardOcp for more info (they have to good articles on 64 bit gaming).  The 64bit FarCry article can be found here.
  • 5-11-05 The summer CPL event will be held on July 6-10.  Go here for more details.
  • 5-10-05 Guess the 5-10-05 date on TM Sunrise was incorrect.  It shipped on Monday so that means it will most likely come in at the end of the week.  On a positive note, the Doom3 Expansion is only $19.99 at Gamestop right now.  So I suppose a little Doom is in order to help with the wait on TMS.  BTW: I just played a bit of the expansion and I have to say I am quite impressed with the Grav-Gun they give you....so far.
  • 5-7-05 The bad news, Trackmania has been delayed.  The good news, it should be in stores by the 10th (fingers crossed).
  • 5-7-05 Trackmania trackpacs have been updated, go to the Mods section for the new download.
  • 5-3-05 It looks like Tackmania Sunrise will be released this Friday, I know I'll be there when the store opens.
  • 5-3-05 Speaking of Trackmania Sunrise, more demo maps have been created, this time by my friend that goes by VR6.  Do you want your track to get on here too, drop it in the submission and I'll see what I can do.  Don't forget to visit http://sunrise.tm-exchange.com/ and give awards to tracks you feel deserve it.
  • 5-3-05  Do you share the same feelings about the average MMORPG's as I do?  I don't understand how they make it, they charge you for a game, then charge you a fee every month you want to play, they restrict if you can sell virtual items, the service may not be running when you want to play it, etc.  These game make no sense to me.  However a game has just been released last week that is attempting to change some of these things called Guild Wars.  This game is made by the same crew who worked on Diablo, Starcraft, & Warcraft.  The major feature it boasts is that there is no monthly fee and it is suppose to be playable on a modem.  They also refer to the game as a CORPG instead because of some of the features.  I could almost see playing this online only game myself.
  • 4-28-05 The Mod section has been put up now, check it out and grab the first Trackmania Sunrise track I created.  (it's the last option on the left if you were wondering)
  • 4-28-05 For those of you that decided to go with Windows XP Pro 64bit and are ATI Radeon users, head over to www.ati.com and get the new Catalyst 5.4 64 bit drivers.
  • 4-26-05 I will host user tracks for the Trackmania Sunrise Demo & Retail versions.  Only send tracks you create to submissions@basicgamer.com .
  • 4-26-05 A Dragonshard preview has been put up at ign.com, go here to check it out (I spotted this last month & it still looks good).
  • 4-26-05 While exciting but not practical yet, Windows XP 64 bit editions should be widely available soon.  I do not seeing this a being very useful for most users as your drivers all have to be written for 64 bit.  This is going to be a pain for at least some time while all the peripherals get the driver updates.  Yeap, so it's that time to decide how much you really like that old controller.  If you are not tied down to old equipment then an upgrade might be for you.  Head over to www.microsoft.com and take a look at their top reasons to buy, trial editions, & free upgrades for qualified users.
  • 4-20-05 Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is set for a early 2006 release.  Normally I don't post things so far in advance but I think this might actually justify a quick peek.  Go to the gamesite for pictures and details.       (Spoiler: they got rid of the 2-D look)
  • 4-20-05 Nvidia Forceware drivers 71.89 were released last week, go to www.nvidia.com to grab them.
  • 4-20-05 Feeling cheap, low on cash, feeling like reliving older games, or just plain like free games?  Rockstar is giving away some of their older games for just filling out a simple little form.  The 3 games available are Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, & Wild Metal.  Head over to http://rockstar.com and go to the classic section (if your lost click here)  Also available from Bethesda Software is their first game Elder Scrolls: Arena, go here to grab it.  (Keep in mind this is a very old game and you may have issues with running it on new systems.)
  • 4-14-05 I just realized something the other day, PC Gamers don't watch TV (or that's what industry people think).  Think for a second... when was the last time you saw an ad on TV for a PC game (not including ones coming out on consoles the same time), high end video cards, gaming hardware, etc.?  As a matter of fact the only recent ads in my memory actually geared toward gaming are the Alienware PC's.  Now don't think I feel that this is a bad thing as I don't need an ad to tell me "hey, this is cool".  Maybe its just that they don't hit us with TV ads because we are bombarded with them on the Net and since we never unplug (hehe) there is no need to show us anything on TV.  Just thought I had to share that with you all.
  • 4-14-05 It's that time again, more XP security fixes are now available on Windows Update.  Do your self a favor and get your box patched.
  • 4-14-05 More Steam updates are available, launch steam and let Valve take over.
  • 4-11-05 DriverHeaven has a nice little write-up for those Nvidia SLI users out there.  They show how to create your own SLI profiles so you can get the performance you paid for.  This is good if you have a game that hasn't been pre-programmed for in the drivers.
  • 4-11-05 More good stuff on DriverHeaven can be found.  Patje's Mobility Modder v2.2 is out now, grab it here www.driverheaven.net/patje/.  If your wondering what this can do for you, it basically lets you install the standard ATI Catalyst drivers on you laptop.  This is really handy if your notebook maker releases drivers once a year or less.
  • 4-9-05 Better a little late then never right? The ATI Catalyst 5.4 video drivers & MMC new updates are available on ATI's site, go to www.ati.com and grab them.
  • 4-9-05 I have been spending a lot of time with the game demo TrackMania Sunrise (see news on 4-3-05), and I have to say this might be one of the best, if not the best racing game I have played, Period!  I spent time with the demo, got gold in all the tracks, then sat patiently waiting for the actual game to come out (not out here in the states yet).  Then I found this cool mod site with lots of user created tracks at http://sunrise.tm-exchange.com/.  I was curious how they were created as the build track option didn't seem to function in the demo, but then I realized that one section is available to build with on the demo!!  So I immediately downloaded some tracks and was extremely impressed, even tried my own track.  These user created tracks are not only awesome but they are very small as well (around 8 KB's per track, yeap KB's!!!!!!).  There are also hundreds of tracks for the demo available as well.  This just hit my #1 game to buy within the next 30 days.  If you check out the site make sure you at least download the Superman2 track (Do not even bother to try this track until you have obtained gold in at least a couple of the demo tracks.
  • 4-9-05 Steam/Half Life2 updates are available, like always it's as simple as launch Steam and wait.
  • 4-9-05 Although pretty old news, this one almost classifies as "get it before its gone".  If you like the Amazing Spiderman comics this deal is for you, it a CD-collection that has all the ASM comics in PDF format from March 63 to Dec 2003 (500+ issues, 11 CD's).  It retails for about $40.00 which is a great deal if you consider the price per issue if you don't have them.  But, Buyer Beware! I had small surface blemishes in a couple of my disk that I did not like seeing in a NEW disk set.  Although every CD could be read, I felt that some of the C1 error levels were a little to high for my tastes.
  • 4-7-05 Beta drivers from Creative Lab for the Audigy 2 sound cards have just been released that is suppose to provide better 3D audio support and performance.  The are beta so use at your own risk.  If your still interested grab them here.
  • 4-6-05 Check out the new map feature of Google, not only can you look up maps now, you can see satellite images of where your going as well.
  • 4-6-05 Looks like it won't be long until Quake 4 sees the light of day since it's been reported to be at the next QuakeCon.  Check out the clip at Gamespot for details.
  • 4-6-05 Don't forget the Doom 3 expansion "Resurrection of Evil" is now available.
  • 4-3-05 Check out the demo for TrackMania Sunrise.  It is a massive update from their first attempt of the racing genre.  If you played the first game and liked the concept but hated the gameplay then this game is for you (think Hard Drivin'/Race Drivin' series).  Head over to www.trackmaniagame.com to check it out.
  • 4-3-05 It was a pretty disappointing April's Fool's Day, nothing really stuck out as being so believable it took weeks to disprove.  If you found one I missed, drop me a line.
  • 3-21-05 For those that like those high-end portable gaming systems make sure you stop by your favorite store this week to pick up a PSP while they are in stock.  Don't forget Wal-Mart is open all night.  If you pick one up let me know what you think of it.  (EDIT: I took out the day I heard it was to be released off as I have been hearing different stories in different places.)
  • 3-21-05 The Sacred expansion "Underworld" is GOLD!  It should hit Germany on 3-24-05 and the rest of us on 4-22-05.
  • 3-20-05 I just stumbled upon a new game that looks very promising.  It's a new RTS based on the D&D environment called Dragonshard.  I'm not quite sure how this slipped under my radar but I have my eyes on it now.  Check it out at http://www.atari.com/dragonshard/home for more info.  Atari's site has June 2005 as the release date.
  • 3-11-05 Well, I suppose ATI users are not the only ones that get drivers, get the nVidia Forceware 71.84 drivers at www.nvidia.com if your on that side of the fence.
  • 3-10-05 ATI Catalyst 5.3 video drivers are available on ATI's site, go to www.ati.com and grab them.  The big update seems to be new OpenGL 2.0 support, error reporting, new control style, plus many other fixes.
  • 3-8-05 The biggest news I know of since the introduction of the 3DFX Voodoo video card is hitting the net right now.  A company called Ageia publicly released information on a new technology called the PhysX chip.  So what's so great about this chip, you might ask?  Well, it's the first PPU (Physics Processing Unit).  Think of what the first 3DFX chips did for the graphics, now think the same for realistic environmental interactions.  The best thing yet is that this technology is based to debut as an add-in PCI & PCI-Express card to come out by years end.  This is by far the most exiting news I have heard of in the last several years period!  If you are looking for news on this technology, I recommend visiting their site first http://www.ageia.com/index.html as they have interviews & site previews listed in their NEWS section.  After that visit your favorite hardware site for more info.  I see this technology becoming the next major leap in gaming.

  • 2-22-05 Want to make the next big game?  Don't have the time or experience to write your own engine? Check this site out http://www.garagegames.com/, that cool game you want to make might be closer than you think.
  • 2-22-05 Fixed a bug in this site over the weekend that would not display the SWKeys font while on the www.basicgamer.com domain, it did not effect the basicgamer.com domain though.  Please contact me with system specs if the fonts are not correct.
